Pretend I’m the Queen of the Sea–
in my long reign
we will dance upon the waves,
careless of the sparkling spindrift
delighting
water-spriting
unrestrained,
without reins
we’ll ride our horses of ocean blue
under the singing stars,
and only a gentle rain will fall,
soft drumming to the humming moon

This poem is for dVerse. Lillian has asked us to use the words rain, rein, and/or reign, and to write something upbeat.
I’ve used this painting by Ilya Repin before, but I love it. The Blue Horses and spindrift are for Jane. 🙂
Just what I needed this morning 🙂 I agree about the painting—it’s so full of joy. And the humming moon too 🙂
Thanks, Jane. I’m glad you liked it.
It made me happy writing it–now to keep that mood through the reality of the day. 🙂
That’s the hard bit 🙂
Indeed. 🙂
You know how much I love that Repin painting…yes, and perfect words to start the day. (K)
Thank you, Kerfe!
Delightful – this is a very good makebelief
Thank you very much, Björn! It made me feel happy. 🙂
Well done! You got all 3 prompts in as well reigning as Queen of the Sea. Loved this 🙂
Thank you very much, Vivian! 🙂
Fabulous! What an upbeat and fabulous way to begin my morning on the Cape…with the waves lapping and the image of being Queen of the Seas. There is such joy in this post! LOVE the illustration and love the energy and idea of this! So very well done. Thanks so much for responding to the prompt!!
Thanks so much, Lillian! Enjoy your time on the Cape!
The play of the words follows the tone of the poem so smoothly. Unrestrained / without reins. Nice!
Thank you so much!
Lovely, Merril. “…we will dance upon the waves, / careless of the sparkling spindrift.” Just perfect!
Thank you very much, Sarah!
Enchanting, and love the paintings too!
Thank you so much!
I liked the last line about the rain drumming to the humming moon.
Thank you, Frank.
Love the exuberance of this poem and after reading it, I want to go “water-spriting.” The paintings are joyful, too. 🙂
Thank you, Robin. I’m glad you liked the “water-spriting.” I just had to use it. 🙂
Beautifully written accompaniment to those sweeping waves
Thank you very much, Derrick.
Well done … for me, it was the siren calling one into the sea.
Thank you, Frank. I’m happy it made you hear the siren’s call. 🙂
As long as I don’t go into the ocean following her call.
😉
The singing stars, the gumming moon, the drumming rain…you hit the trifecta of music in this!
Thank you! 🙂
Nice
Thank you.
Your poem is so enlivening, Merril, especially the lines:
‘water-spriting
unrestrained,
without reins’.
Thank you so much, Kim!
Good evening 🐞

I appreciate the upbeat. Thanks.
Thank you, Janet.
This poem and painting was full of joyous abandon!
I always enjoy how you observe a painting (I remembered this one which reminds me of Tevya from “Fiddler on the Roof”) and are able to imagine such wonderful adventures, Merril. 🎼
Thank you, Robin. I’m happy you remembered the painting. I really like it.
I like their splashing about and I would crown you “Queen of the Sea!”
Thank you, Robin.
Though to be honest, I like to admire it from the shore. 🙂
There’s freedom in your gorgeous words. I now want to romp with the ocean waves and sing with the harmonious moon. Thrilling and addicting poetry, your Majesty. 🌊💧👑
Thank you very much, dear Rose! 🙂
Oh my! stunning poetry dear Merril! 🌺
Thank you so much, Holly!
