The moon hums, and the stars sing
and the souls go a-wandering,
to dance in a shimmering ring.
There is no past, no care what future brings
as they float and whirl and swing–
while the moon hums, and the stars sing,
the owls hoot along, then they take wing,
and the trees remember—everything–
as the souls go a-wandering.
Perhaps I dream? Time circles, springs
when souls fly high in gossamer strings,
to dance in shimmering rings.
Off prompt today for NaPoWriMo. I just couldn’t face sad, and the first two lines came to me at the gym. (Don’t ignore the muse!) This is a cascade poem. I wrote of a cascade, but I didn’t actually write a cascade poem for Amaya’s prompt the other day on dVerse, so I’m doing this one for Open Link night.
I like this! It seems to dance more than cascade, swirling round and spinning high.
Thank you, Jane.
I think you’re right. It’s the cascade form, but it’s a dance. What can I say–sometimes poems insist on doing things there own way. 🙂
I can imagine the moon refusing to cascade. It’s off-putting when you’re humming 🙂
Hahaha. You’re right! 🙂
I can’t imagine the Oracle cascading either come to that…
No–I’m not sure if she dances either—though maybe when no one can see her.
Erm…does anyone ever see her?
I don’t know. I imagine her being corporeal somewhere. 🙂
I bet you have to be blindfolded in her presence though 🙂
Of course. 🙂
This is such a wonderful dance… I like the moon in this
Thank you very much, Björn.
I like this dancing moon!
Thank you, Toni!
A lilting dancing poetic tune, one that could be recited for the ages. Excellent.
Thank you very much, Pam! 🙂
Moon dance, indeed–placed between ballad and song. The refrains work well, and though there is no thundering cascade, there is a sweet babble.
Thank you, Glenn! 🙂
My favorite lines…”while the moon hums, and the stars sing, the owls hoot along, then they take win” loved this, Merril!
Thank you very much, Jill!
You’ve conjured an ethereal realm that brings joy — to the participants and to the witnesses.
Thank you very much, Jade!
You are welcome.
I love the idea of the souls going a wandering…and Jane is right, it is very like a circle dance. And the photo! (K)
Thank you so much, Kerfe!
Agree with Jane! This does feel like a dance.
Lovely.
Thank you, Dale! 🙂
This poem flows gorgeously! ❤️ I am in awe 😀
Thank you so much!
I really like this piece. Well written.
Thank you!
Smart move. I’ve been using Diane Lockwards first craft book so far this month.
Smart move to ignore the prompt and go with the lines that came into my head?
Yuppers.
Ama-zing, Merril! I love the phantasmagorical nature of it…
Thanks so much, Rob!
I love that you used phantasmagorical. 🙂
This is so wonderful read aloud, silky smooth in rhythm and rhyme. The repetition is lulling. Enjoyed this very much, Merril !
Thank you very much, Mish!
I like the relaxed feel of this.
Thank you, Ken.
I love the image of stars singing and souls wandering in response. It’s a dance, it’s a rhythm, it’s a journey!
(Also, I finished my Day 4, which is nowhere as buoyant as yours and I wish it were!

Thank you so much! 🙂
I’ll go look at yours now.
You’ve written a tunefully haunting cascade poem, Merril. I love the humming, singing and shimmering!
Thank you very much, Kim!
I love this dance. The humming moon, the circular time… everything. 🙂
Thanks so much, Robin. 🙂
Streaming like the stars
Thank you, Derrick.
Such carefree feelings. You picked the perfect words for this form, as it gives it such rhythm and feels like a playground dance.
Thank you very much!
