The January sun is slow to rise
she shakes her flaxen head,
then dabs a bit of light—
there some color, bright
against grey, wheat, white,
the silvered-lawn sparkles–behold!
What’s to come? Black crow calls—more cold–
before summer blooms in colors bold.
A quadrille for dVerse, where De asks us to use some form of the word dab.
Reblogged this on The Wombwell Rainbow.
Merril- this is so rich with beauty and light. And your photo is stunning.
Thank you so much, Linda!
Oh… i love this… we had such a pale winter sun before lunch today before she decided to hide from us behind the clouds.
Thank you very much, Björn. After the beautiful sunrise, the sun hid behind the clouds here, too. It turns out that I was out in the sunniest part of the day!
I love the imagery of the sun putting on her make-up for the day! I love her sparkle at the moment, but if she could add a bit of heat that would be perfect!
Thank you! Yes, I agree it would be–and I’m sure even more so for you.
Love love LOVE those last rhymed lines, especially. Delicately added, as if dabbed on by a paintbrush. Wonderful.
What a lovely comment, De. Thank you!
You’re looking forward to summer already! Those splashes of sunlight are like random dabs.
Thanks. I don’t really want summer yet. I just don’t want it too cold. 😀
No, you’d miss out on spring if we passed straight to summer, but I agree, a bit less cold would be appreciated.
Exactly!
your poem captures the beauty of that chilly yet wondrous photo … guessing that dabs of light are treats during winter.
Thanks so much, Kate. Yes, how I was feeling this morning when I went out for a walk.
good for you to keep walking in that cold … think I’d struggle to get out of bed
I get up very early no matter what–but you’re right that I don’t always want to go out in the cold!
I get up early every morning but tend to exercise [walk or cycle] late arvo when our sun has lost it’s fiery heat.
When I’ve lived in cold areas I really struggle to throw those bed clothes off …
Wonderful word choices.
Thank you!
You’re welcome.
This is absolutely splendid, Merril! I love the colour palette here with “grey, wheat, white,”// your poetic lawn most certainly sparkles! 😍😍
Aww–thank you so much,Sanaa!
You’re most welcome! 🌹
Here in the Pac NW, we call those dabs of light “sunbreaks”. There is no heat in them, but those moments of high contrast and electric blue skies are great for photography.
Thanks, Glenn. I’ll take it.
Excellent use of the 44, setting a lovely scene.
Thank you very much, Beverly.
Maybe you’ve already corrected it, but you had the wrong link in the Mr. Linky when I tried it.
The silvered-lawn sparkles… beautiful. Awesome photo, too, Merril. Salute!
Thank you so much, Ron!
Very well done, Merril 🙂
The photo and poem are perfect complements to one another.
-David
Thank you very much, David!
Excellent, Merril! You’re making me long for summer. I’m tired of freezing and I’m in the south. Gorgeous photo!
Thank you so much, Jill!
And thank you for responding to so many post from me. 😀

The imagery is stunning! Lovely!
Thank you so much!
Luv the vanity of Lady Sun putting on her make up to start the day
Happy you dropped by to read mine
Much💝love
Thank you, and you’re welcome!
I like your use of the sun dabbling color here and there across the morning landscape! Very well done!
Thank you very much, Dwight!
Beautiful words and imagery. Lovely quadrille.
Thank you so much!
Cold and pale optimism in this piece Merril, I particularly liked the restrained, almost cautious, movement in the line ‘against grey, wheat, white,’ – dawn may be coming but she’s not hurrying…
Thank you for your close reading, Peter.
Aren’t we prolific today!
A lovely portrait of winter.
Thank you! I try not to post so often, because I don’t want to be annoying, but sometimes it happens. 😏
I know you don’t and you won’t be blacklisted by me 😉
And you’re welcome 🙂
😘
😘
Exquisite ✨ Your words set the scene so well I really didn’t need the picture, but that was a bonus! 😍
Thank you, Tricia. That is so kind. I’m pleased you enjoyed it.
Mesmerizing, enchanting, you took me there!

A beautiful pairing of quadrille and photography, Merril, and a skilful capture of the January sun s an artist, with delicate use of colour!

You have given the sun a delightful identity

I love the vision of the sun painting the sky…it does! (K)
